How to Tie a Karate Belt Knot

Not only does a karate belt hold a karate uniform snugly in place around your body as you engage in this form of martial arts, but the belt also shows your karate level and achievement as you progress through the different levels of karate. Whether you sport a black belt or a less advanced color, the process of tying your belt around you is important to ensure it does not interfere with your movements. Tie a karate belt knot snugly to keep your belt secure.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold one end of the belt so it is approximately even with the bottom edge of your jacket. Bring the belt up from this edge and place your hand over the belt at your waistline to hold it here so it doesn’t move.

    • 2

Pull the other end of the belt behind you and wrap it around your waist one time, meeting it back around at your front. Cross the long end of the belt over the short end.

    • 3

Wrap the belt around your waist again and bring the end back to your center front, crossing it over the short end of the belt.

    • 4

Tuck the long end of the belt under both wrapped layers of belt at your center front and pull it down over the short end so both ends of the belt extend straight down.

    • 5

Shift the short end of the belt over toward the right and leave the other end of the belt on the left.

    • 6

Pull up the short end of the belt over the other end to make a loop to begin making a knot.

    • 7

Insert the long end of the belt through the loop you just made and tighten both ends of the belt in a knot at your center front. The ends of the belt should drop down equally from the knot.

    • 8

Tighten the belt knot by pulling both ends of the belt evenly.
