How to Perform the Axe Hand Strike

The "Axe-Hand Chop" is a staple of several different martial arts styles -- including Karate and some forms of Chinese Kung Fu. It is probably best recognized as the venerable "Karate Chop" of Bruce Lee fame. Essentially, it is striking at an opponent or target with the edge of your hand opposite your thumb, rather than using knuckles or the heel of your palm.

Instructions

    • 1

Extend all your fingers straight out, keeping them pressed together lightly as you do so.

    • 2

Extend your thumb away from your hand. This will prevent you from "cupping" the blow and either lessening the impact or causing damage to your hand.

    • 3

Snap your forearm forward and strike your target with the edge of your hand. In close quarters or against thicker targets you can also use your forearm up to the elbow as a striking surface.
