How to Defend in a Three Step Taekwondo Spar

The defensive moves of three-step sparring in taekwondo are basic blocks executed in the L stance and a counter attack at the end. An attacker advances while throwing midsection punches, and you retreat and block the strikes in three-step sparring. By practicing this kind of exercise repetitively in taekwondo, you will develop balance and coordination.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring your left foot to your right foot and bow to your partner.

    • 2

Move your left foot back out about shoulder-width apart. Hold your arms in front of you with your hands made into fists.

    • 3

Kihap, or yell, to let your partner know you are ready to begin sparring; your partner will do the same when he's ready to attack.

    • 4

Step back with your right foot into an L stance as your partner throws a punch. At the same time, execute a middle inner forearm block with your right arm by crossing it over your body, swinging it out with the elbow bent, and pulling your fist with the palm up back to your waist.

    • 5

Repeat the taekwondo moves above on the opposite side when your attacker throws a punch.

    • 6

End the three-step sparring by executing a front snap kick with your right leg as a counter attack.
