A Thousand Acres of Wilderness

At the western edge of Marquette County, Van Riper State Park spans 1,055 acres on the shores of Lake Michigamme and the Peshekee River. Lake Michigamme harbors some of the best walleye fishing in the region; fish the lake as well as the river with a current Michigan fishing license. The park also offers shore access, boat ramps, a swimming beach and several miles of hiking trails that explore lush forests, meadows and river banks. Van Riper State Park has a variety of camping options, including a campground with modern restrooms, showers and nearly 150 electric tent and RV campsites. A smaller primitive campground has 40 non-electric sites with access to vault toilets. All campsites include picnic tables, campfire rings and access to drinking water.
Camping at Horseshoe Lake

Horseshoe Lake Campground spans 60 acres on the shore of its namesake lake, with 1,250 feet of lake frontage that includes a fishing pier, boat launch and swimming beach. Boat rentals, including canoes and paddle boats, are available. Campers can choose among 67 campsites at Horseshoe Lake, many of them just footsteps away from the water. Campsites range from primitive tent sites to full hookup RV sites with water, sewer and 30- to 50-amp electricity. Hot showers, flush toilets, RV dumping stations and laundry facilities are provided. A camp store sells food and drinks, live bait, ice, firewood and camping supplies.
Near the Shore of Lake Superior

Managed by Marquette County, Perkins Park Campground sits less than five minutes from Lake Superior's Big Bay. Fish on the bay or at nearby Lake Independence. A quiet nature trail leads through forest to a wetland observation deck. A wide range of camping options are available, including full hookup campsites, electric-only sites, primitive sites and cabins. A handful of campsites overlook the shore of Lake Independence, and some are designed as pull-through sites with 50-amp electricity for big rigs.
Michigamme Shores

Michigamme Shores Campground is a prime destination for campers looking for a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Fishing, boating and swimming are available on Lake Michigamme, and the hiking trails that wind along the shoreline provide opportunities to spot deer, moose, otters, beavers, black bears and bald eagles. Van Riper State Park is less than five minutes away. Michigamme Shores Campground includes about 80 campsites, including RV spaces with water, sewer and 20- to 50-amp electricity. Primitive tent sites are also available, along with backwoods cabins. Visitors can access wireless Internet, rent a boat on the lake or stop at the camp store, which sells groceries, firewood, camping supplies, bait and fishing licenses.
Primitive Forest Camping

Consisting of mostly undeveloped woods and wetlands, Anderson Lake West State Forest includes a small primitive campground with 19 sites for tents and small RVs. Hookups are not provided, but each campsite comes with a picnic table and campfire ring. Vault toilets are available, and potable drinking water is accessible from hand pumps. Campsites are first-come, first-served. The campground provides access to several hiking trails, including the 6-mile Anderson Lake Pathway. The forest is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including foxes, deer and moose.
