How to Climb a Tall Tree

1
Evaluate any tall trees that you'd like to climb. Avoid trees that are dead or showing signs of disease, notes Tree Climbers International. Look for dead limbs that may give way while you are climbing, and plan your climbing route to avoid them.
-
2
Plan your climb by choosing healthy, large branches that are close together, notes Disney Family. You should be able to keep both hands securely wrapped around a weight-bearing branch while moving your feet.
-
3
Ascend the tree. Pull yourself off the ground using the lowest available branch. Continue to climb by reaching for nearby weight-bearing branches. Alan Conroy, an advocate for safe tree climbing, recommends keeping at least three points of secure contact with the tree at all times while climbing.
-
4
Climb only as high as you feel comfortable. Even if the tree is 75 feet tall, if you feel unsafe or anxious at 20 feet, you should stop climbing, notes Tree Climbers International.
-
5
Descend slowly and carefully. Disney Family recommends keeping both hands around a branch while feeling for a secure branch for each foot, then removing one hand at a time as you move to a lower branch.
