Take note of the glacier rating system. Each glacier is classified according to the terrain, difficulty of the climb and the ability and equipment needed. Choose a glacier that corresponds with your previous experience and ability. Rock climbing or mountaineering experience will help with glacier climbing. Start with low-level glaciers as you can always work your way up later.

Register with a group and always climb with a minimum of four people. Climbing in groups is safer and better with a mixture of different abilities to help those with less experience. Keep close to the group at all times.

    • 3

Have the right equipment with you. What you need will depend on the difficulty of the climb and glacier itself. Low-level climbs may only require weatherproof clothes and suitable footwear but for harder climbs, you may need an ice helmet or axe. Ask an instructor for a full list and always take a lightweight first aid kit with you.

Follow the instructions of your guide. Especially if you are new to glacier climbing, it is important for your safety and the others in your group that your follow all instructions carefully.

    • 5

Respect the wildlife and terrain and always obey the bylaws. If you come across wild animals, don't approach them and go around if possible. Try to have as little impact on the environment as possible by clearing up all trash and not destroying any trees or rock formations.
