How to Hand Spear Fish

Using a hand spear, a practice commonly referred to as spearfishing, is an ancient fishing technique that has been reinvented in modern times with more modern equipment. It is also ecologically sustainable and a great way to be active in the water. Though there are many different kinds of spears that vary in their technological sophistication, a common spear with both beginners and professionals is the simple pole spear, which consists of a long shaft, a pointy end and a rubber loop for providing propulsion.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a likely spot where you will be able to find some fish. Be aware that you may need a fishing license, depending on where you are fishing, and that there may be regulations specific to spearfishing in that area.

    • 2

Put your fins, snorkel and mask on, and either wade in from the shore or drop in from a boat. Your diving partner should stay on land or in the boat, to provide help should you need it.

    • 3

Swim slowly and calmly until you spot a fish. You may have to stalk the fish and bide your time until it is in range of your spear.

    • 4

Hold the rubber loop in one hand and use your other hand to pull the butt of the spear towards you, then grip the spear shaft with the hand with the rubber loop in it. The rubber should now be under tension, so that when you release the shaft of the spear it will be propelled forward by the tension of the rubber loop.

    • 5

Get the point of the spear within several feet of the fish, or however long the length of the rubber loop will accommodate. Point the spear directly at the fish and release the shaft. The spear should spring forward, impaling the fish.

    • 6

Return to your boat or shore and deposit the fish. Be aware that the blood of the fish may attract other, larger predators to your area in search of a meal.
