How to Make a Lure With Cork

Fishing is a popular and relaxing hobby, but all the special equipment required can make it quite expensive. One way to cut back on the costs is to make some of the kit yourself and one of the best things to make is a lure. Using a plastic or cork wine bottle stopper you can make a basic lure very quickly and for very little money. You can then decorate the lure to suit the fishing environment or potential catches.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a 45-degree angle on one end of the cork that extends about a third of the way down, using a file, a hacksaw or a steak knife.

    • 2

Drill a small hole lengthways through the cork so it comes out nearer the tip of the angle created in Step 1.

    • 3

Run a piece of small-diameter wire though the hole.

    • 4

Create a loop in the wire at the angled end and knot it together. Hold the end of the loop and the main shaft of the wire together with the pliers and place a nail through the loop. Twist the nail three or four times to create a hook eye.

    • 5

Pull the wire back through the cork so the eye is firmly against the angled edge of the cork.

    • 6

Attach lure accessories to the other end of the wire such as beads, propeller blades and rubber skirts.

    • 7

Secure the accessories by creating another loop eye in the same way as Step 4.

    • 8

Paint the lure in vivid colors to attract fish. Reds, pinks and yellows work well, but this is entirely a personal choice. Leave the paint to dry as per manufacturer's guidelines.

    • 9

Glue on plastic eyes to the cork lure after the paint has dried to make it even more enticing for the fish.
