Pennsylvania Fly-Fishing Schools

Private outfitters and large national companies operate fly-fishing schools in Pennsylvania. Instruction combines class lectures with hands-on experience along Pennsylvania's rivers. Classes are available throughout the state and during the spring and fall, depending on location. Many of the courses provide special lodging rates for students at nearby establishments.

    • Orvis runs a two-day fly-fishing school in Nemacolin at the Woodlands Resort. Students fish in the Youghiogheny River during the course. The course combines outdoor instructions with indoor classwork; instructors use video analysis to help students perfect their technique. The school teaches its own Orvis Progressive Method To Fly Casting, which emphasizes adaptability. The program boasts a 4 to 1 student to teacher ratio for individual attention. The course activities last from 9 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. both days, which allows the students to enjoy other activities at the resort such as the golf course and spa. The school typically offers nine sessions from July through October.

    The Evening Rise Fly-Fishing School

    • The Evening Rise fly-fishing outfitter company operates a two-day school in Lititz Run. The school is held at the Millport Conservancy. The course is for beginners and covers the basics of fly-fishing. The school provides a rod and reel for students to use during the course. Class size is limited to eight students maximum. All students must bring a Pennsylvania fishing license to class.

    Kinzua Fly Fishing School

    • The school offers courses two times a year in the spring. A two-day course provides 20 hours of instruction, and a three-day course provides 30 hours. Beginner and intermediate classes are available. Students practice fishing with an instructor and attend classroom lectures. Instruction lasts until 10 p.m. Students may choose to stay at the University of Pittsburgh, Bradford campus during the course. The school is located in the Allegheny Mountains.
