1
Purchase a utility backpack that will hold all your supplies. This type of backpack is made of a durable material, such as canvas, and will have several pockets and straps for carrying your belongings. You'll be carrying a few items in addition to your learning materials, so it's important that the backpack is big enough. Padded straps help add comfort, which is important since you'll be doing a lot of walking.

2
Compile your school supplies to make sure you don't forget anything. This might include textbooks, a binder, pencil case, or other necessities. Ensure your backpack isn't too heavy by avoiding bringing items that you won't use throughout the day.
-
3
Staying hydrated when backpacking is extremely important, just as it is with other forms of exercise. Fill a thermos or bottle with water so that you can drink from it during your hike to school. This, along with a light snack, can help prevent exhaustion and dehydration.
-
4
Bring a map with you, just in case you make a wrong turn or want to experiment with a new route. You probably won't be traveling very far outside your neighborhood, but it's a good idea to be prepared.
-
5
Prepare a small personal hygiene pack complete with a few items that you can use to freshen up once you arrive on campus. This can include a stick of deodorant, body spray, hand soap, and a small brush for your hair.
-
6
Place all the items into your backpack, starting with those that weigh the most. Keeping the heavy items close to your back will place less strain on that area. Once it's full, place the backpack on a scale to weigh it. You pack should not weigh more than 10 to 15 percent of your body weight; otherwise, it may hurt your back. If you weight 100 pounds, for example, the backpack should weigh no more than 15 pounds when fully loaded.

7
Put pair of lightweight, all-terrain boots, grab your backpack and start your hike to school. Be sure to notify at least one other person about your plans and the route you'll take to get there, just in case of emergency.
