1
Check with the Yosemite National Park's website (see Resources) for critical updates on road conditions and the availability of hiking trails. Inclement weather and other unforeseen events can cause trail closures, which can ruin a planned hike. Yosemite is subject to winter snowstorms, seasonal rain showers and occasional rock slides, but the weather is usually moderate unless a specific warning has been given.

2
Equip yourself with a pair of comfortable hiking boots. When you spend the day hiking, your boots are one of the most important items you can bring. Yosemite has a wide range of terrains but mostly comprises wooded and rocky areas with mild brush. Look for boots with strong ankle support to prevent twists and arch support for comfort. Well-fitting boots are crucial to a successful hike.

3
Get a map of Yosemite Valley, as well as a compass, before embarking on your hike. If you end up off the beaten path or are lost somewhere in the park, a map and compass could be the difference between needing a rescue and making it back to camp.
-
4
Acquire any necessary permits for the hike. For instance, you currently must have a permit to hike to the top of Half Dome or enter the backcountry. Specifics on permits are available on the Yosemite website.
-
5
Follow all posted rules to ensure your hike is safe and fun. This includes no fires above 9,600 feet, packing food in bear-proof containers and refraining from cutting up any trees, standing or otherwise. Violations of posted rules can result in fines as well as possible injury.

6
Double-check your supplies. Make sure you have a weather-resistant, waterproof backpack, a sleeping bag, trail stove and at least one small pot. You should also pack plenty of water, a first-aid kit and a few pairs of clean socks. Lightweight food is a must: Bring foods such as instant oatmeal, granola bars and coffee to help get the day started. See the backpacking checklist in the Resources section for weather- and season-specific recommendations.
