Outdoor Hiking Clubs in Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix's generally pleasant fall through spring temperatures are not the only reason the Arizona metropolis is a popular area for hikers.The diverse landscape also affords the opportunity to explore many different terrains. Hikers can explore the Sonoran Desert, the grassy lands next to the Salt River and Superstition and White Tank Mountain. Many even take weekend trips to Sedona and the Grand Canyon to hike. This plethora of trails and parks makes Phoenix a hub for many hiking clubs.
  1. Friends Hiking Club

    • The Friends Hiking Club regularly hikes the Red Rocks of Sedona.

      The Friends Outdoor Hiking and Backpacking Club meets for hikes in various parts of the city approximately once a week. The group also takes on more challenging excursions, often hiking in the mountains around Phoenix. Non-members are welcome at all events for $3 per hike, and a yearly membership is $15, as of December 2010. The Friends group occasionally does backpacking and overnight camping hikes in Phoenix parks.

    Arizona Outdoor and Travel Club

    • Regular hikes on Sunrise Peak are popular.

      The Arizona Outdoor and Travel Club hikes in Phoenix and statewide. Membership is open to families, couples and singles. A married or family membership is $40 per year as of December 2010, and a single membership is $25 per year. There is no need to register for events once you are a member.

    Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club

    • The Trailblazers hike and camp in the Grand Canyon.

      The Trailblazers, who have been a hiking club for more than 15 years, were originally only employees of Motorola. This policy changed nearly 10 years ago, and today the club enjoys exploring new trails in the Phoenix area. The club does not allow pets on hikes, but does do a backpacking trip to the Grand Canyon. As of December 2010, membership is $25 annually.

    Backcountry Hiking Club

    • Backcountry Hiking Club has hiked Camelback Mountain.

      The Backcountry Hiking Club says its mission is to provide a way for fitness-minded adults to explore the outdoors. The group says all hikes are non-competitive. Membership fees, as of December 2010, are $10 per individual and $15 per family. The club also has a hiking hotline, (602) 280-7647, with information on upcoming hikes.
