How to Bend Trees to Use as Markers

Beginner trails are always well-worn and clearly marked for hikers. But, for those who enjoy exploring the more advanced trails, you'll typically need to create your own markers. There is a simple technique that you can do to mark your trail and make sure that you can find your way out of the woods once your hike is done. This technique, known as limbing, is the process of selecting distinct branches and either bending or breaking the branches to form a discernible marker.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your hike and look for a branch along your path that is sticking out from the rest of the branches. The branch should ideally be at eye level or slightly above.

    • 2

Break the branch, pointing it straight down to indicate that the path you're on is the correct one. Make sure that the branch is firmly hanging in place, otherwise your marker could fall onto the trail should the wind pick up.

    • 3

Hike ten feet and break another branch. Turn around and make sure that you can see the other branch from your current location. If possible, break this branch is a way so that it points to your previous marker.

    • 4

Continue breaking branches every 10 to 15 feet on your hike to clearly mark your trail.
