1
Determine the size of the halter that you want to make. A small halter, such as the kind used by a pony, will require 18 feet of rope. For each larger sized halter, add an additional two feet of rope. Measure out the rope for the halter using a measuring tape. Cut off the appropriate amount of rope using a sharp knife. Then cauterize the ends of the rope using a lighter.

2
Measure out the length of the halter from the end of the knot to the first tie. This first tie is the knot at the right ear. The length for a small halter from the end to the right ear is 28 inches. Add two inches for each additional size. Tie an overhand knot in the rope at this point. Measure the distance from your first knot to your second knot, the right nose knot. This will be seven inches for a small halter. Add an additional inch for each size halter except for the 2XL halter, which will be 16 inches. Tie an overhand knot for the right nose knot.

Measure the distance from your second knot to the third knot. This third knot is the left nose knot. The distance from the right nose knot to the left nose knot is eight inches for a small bridle. Add an additional inch for each additional size bridle. Tie an overhand knot. Measure the distance from your left nose knot to the throat latch knot. The distance on a small bridle is 29 inches. Add two inches for each additional size. Tie an overhand knot.

Make a tie loop by measuring the distance from the throat latch to the tie loop. A small halter will use eight inches. Each additional size will add an inch to the length. Hold the rope in a loop and make an overhand knot. The tie loop should be four inches in length. Measure out eight inches for a small halter, and an additional inch for each size halter. Then tie the loose rope into the left nose knot in a double overhand knot. To tie a double overhand knot, loosen the overhand knot, thread in the rope and re-tie it.

5
Measure out eight inches from the left nose knot to the right nose knot for a small bridle and an additional inch for each successive bridle size. Tie the bridle rope into the right nose knot with another double overhand knot. Measure 29 inches of rope from the right nose knot on a small bridle. Add and an additional two inches for each additional bridle size. Tie this point into the throat latch knot with a double overhand knot.

6
Measure eight inches on a small bridle to the point where you will tie the leader of rope into the right ear knot. Add an additional inch per size of rope. Tie this rope into the right ear knot using a double overhand knot. Tie a knot into the bottom of the two long end sections under the chin.
