How to Make a Game Lanyard

Game lanyards are strong necklaces used to secure calls around the neck of a hunter. A good game lanyard is especially important for expensive duck calls and other bird calls, because hunting for these birds often requires wading in water. Simple knotting techniques can make a strong lanyard that you can feel confident about holding your calls, both in the water and on land. Lanyards can be purchased for this use, but they can be made from parachute cord at home as well.

Fold the two strands of cord in half, with the mid-points together. Tie an overhead knot using all four strands about five inches from the mid-point. Hold the two shorter strands taut. These will be the base of your lanyard. The longer strands will be used to knot around this base to strengthen your lanyard.

Weave the right long cord behind the two base strands to create a loop on the right. Wrap the left long over the base strands and through the loop. Pull tight.

Create a loop with the strand that is now on your left side by sliding it behind the base strands. Pull the strand on your right over the base cords and pull through the loop on the left. Tighten.

Repeat these steps and continue alternating sides until the lanyard is approximately 40 inches long. Fold the lanyard in half, and tie in an overhand knot. Pull until the knot tightens against the square knots above it.

Snip the looped ends, and tie the loose ends to your calls to secure them. Use two strands for heavy calls.
