How to Change the Powder Type on a Dillon Powder Measure Hopper

Dillon Precision Products, Inc., manufactures tools and accessories used by hand-loading hobbyists to reload firearm ammunition. Their progressive-reloading presses automate many reloading functions, allowing rapid-ammunition production. The Dillon powder measure is a common component found on all of the company's progressive presses. The device automatically dispenses a pre-measured charge of powder into each cartridge. Changing the powder type in the Dillon powder measure's hopper requires removal of the powder measure assembly from the press.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the charge bar on the powder measure to make sure it's in the closed position. The front of the charge bar should be nearly flush with the front of the powder measure.

    • 2

Locate the bracket-holding screw on the right side of the connector collar. The connector collar is the part of the assembly between the powder die and the powder measure. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to turn the holding screw two full turns counterclockwise.

    • 3

Hold the charge bar in the closed position with your thumb, then lift up on the powder measure to disengage it from the connector collar.

    • 4

      Remove the powder measure lid.

    • 5

Pour the contents of the powder-measure tube back into its original container. Use a funnel, if necessary, to keep the powder from spilling.

    • 6

Pour the new powder type into the powder measure tube. To ensure proper operation of the powder measure, fill the tube at least 3/4 full with powder. Replace the powder-measure lid.

    • 7

Hold the charge bar in the closed position with your thumb, then insert the powder measure into the connector collar. Secure the powder measure in place by turning the bracket-holding screw on the collar two turns clockwise with a Phillips head screwdriver.
