Necky Rip Kayak Specifications

Necky introduced its Rip model in September 2009. The polyethylene recreational kayak is aimed primarily at beginners and intermediate paddlers seeking a stable boat. Outside magazine's Summer 2010 buyers' guide issue selected the Rip as one of the season's best kayaks for beginners. It "stays on course and maintains speed almost in spite of what its paddler is doing," according to Outside reviewers. The Rip's specifications distinguish it from other boats in its class.
  1. Size and Capacity

    • The Necky Rip measures 10.5 feet in length and 28.5 inches in width. Its large cockpit opening is 46.5 inches long and 19.5 inches wide, allowing trouble-free entries and exits. The Rip weighs 43 pounds, and its maximum carrying capacity ranges from 250 to 300 pounds.

    Hull Design and Stability

    • Necky claims that the Rip's "efficient length and a sharp keel give the Rip tremendous glide," compared to other kayaks in its class. Outside magazine lauded the Rip's stability: "In rough seas it had excellent primary and secondary stability --- testers said the Rip never felt tippy --- and the wind didn't blow it around."

    Features

    • The Rip features Necky's proprietary Comfort Flex foam seat, which is equipped with lower-back pads. The kayak also comes with custom foam thigh pads, adjustable foot pedals and a cup holder.

    Storage

    • The Rip features a quick-seal hatch with Necky's easy-opening Lock Buckle System. The hatch, located on the stern, measures 16.5 inches by 10.5 inches. It has a storage capacity of 3,917 cubic inches.

    Colors

    • The Necky Rip comes in five colors: dark blue, light blue, red, yellow and orange.

    Price

    • As of April 2011, the Necky Rip's suggested retail price is $599.
