Bicycle Trails in New Jersey

With over 7,400 square miles of coastland, mountains, forests and cities, New Jersey offers a wide-ranging biking experience for road bikers, BMXers and just about everyone. Each of the state's five regions--northeast, northwest, central, southeast and southwest--represent the tiny state's diverse landscape, perfect for riders looking for a new daily trail or weekend warriors seeking their next fix of adrenaline.
  1. Sandy Hook State Park

    • The premier state park on the Jersey shore, Sandy Hook offers nine miles of paved bike trials through untouched coastland and forest. The trails are level and well-suited for riders of any skill level, including children. The park is open year-round, sunrise to sunset.

    Bradley Gardens

    • The Bradley Gardens trails in Bridgewater are former racing grounds for dirt bikes. For the most part, the trails are flat and ride directly alongside the Raritan River. There are available stretches where the elevation will climb as high as 50 feet. Be warned that you will get dirty, as much of the six miles of unpaved trails take you directly through thick forest and vegetation.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

    • The Delaware River runs over 200 miles separating western New Jersey from Pennsylvania.

In addition to pristine mountain views and an abundance of wildlife and fresh air, mountain and road cyclists taking to the Water Gap will find over 11 miles of mostly level terrain near the tiny town of Flatbrookville. Mountain bikers can also find unpaved rocky and mountain trails in the park's 67,000 acres.

    • Stretching from South Toms River to Barnegat, the Barnegat Branch Bike Trail lets riders of all ages and abilities break out their beach cruisers for a 14-mile stretch that curves through light forest; toward the southern half, it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The atmosphere is casual, and the trail is also shared by pedestrians and often times strollers and wheelchairs.
