How to Form a Sports League
Instructions

-
1
Find out what leagues, if any, already exist in your area for the same sport. You don’t want to conflict with any ongoing leagues for lack of player availability.
-
2
Announce the formation of the new sports league by distributing flyers at local parks, schools, community centers and sporting events. Depending on the age of participants in your league, you can contact parents, or possibly get mailing or email lists from the administration of existing leagues. Determining the amount of interest in a new sports league is key in the early stages.
-
3
Determine a budget for the league operating expenses. Also, decide what financial obligations you will need from the participating players in your league and what you need to charge in registration fees.
-
4
Organize a management structure for the league. This will include positions such as president/commissioner, vice president, secretary, treasurer, registrar, scheduler, website coordinator and possible board members. The responsibilities and duties of the management will include managing the league operating expenses, filling team personnel and hiring coaches and umpires or referees.
-
5
Secure facilities for the teams in the league to play in. Fields, parks, courts or gyms will need to be rented or leased for the length of your projected season.
-
6
Purchase the necessary sports equipment needed for play such as balls and goals. Make the cost of expensive individual equipment the responsibility of the individual athletes, such as for football, hockey or lacrosse gear.
-
7
Maintain a league schedule and rankings. Computer software is available to help you organize the logistics of scheduling.
