How to Learn a Back Flip Off a Wall

Performing a back flip off the wall is a true display of athletic ability and agility. Gymnasts, aerialists and even parkour enthusiasts must master the art of back flipping off a wall or another solid object. The art of back flipping will take some time to master, and for many it is difficult at first. If possible, ask someone to be your spotter to help turn your body into the flip when you first start.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch your arms, legs, ankles and neck before practicing the flip. There are many stretches you can do. For some suggestions, see Tips.

    • 2

Find a wall with a flat, even surface. Select a section of the wall to kick off from.

    • 3

Place a mat, if available, in front of that section of the wall to protect yourself from a fall.

    • 4

Determine which leg you want to kick off the wall with. The opposite legs will be kept behind in your initial stance.

    • 5

Ask a spotter to the right or left of you, depending on the leg you plan to kick off with. The spotter will place her hands underneath your leg once it hits the wall and guide you into the flip.

    • 6

Move two full-length strides back from the wall. One stride equals one step while running toward the surface of the wall.

    • 7

Take your stance. Start with the opposite foot behind the foot you want to touch the wall.

    • 8

Run up to the wall. Take two steps and then raise your kick-off foot up to the wall.

    • 9

Push the kick-off foot against the wall, and push the free foot up into the air to help propel your body into the flip. Tuck your chin in, and keep your arms parallel to the sides of your body. Pull the kick-off foot forward into the flip.

    • 10

      Land on both feet.
