Folding-Handle Style

Folding-handle multifunction tools are generally the strongest variety of the implement, and have the most tool options. The folding handle -- upon maneuvering the tool or unfolding it -- typically includes e a pair of pliers at the end, or a combination of wire-cutter and pliers. A selection of tools fold out from each handle. These generally incorporate one or two blades, a saw, can opener, screwdriver tips and scissors. Other options might include a small magnifying glass, a bubble level, small wrenches, Allen keys and corkscrews.
Keychain Style

Keychain-style multifunction tools are small, designed to clip onto your keychain for easy transport. These tools offer the least amount of options -- and are harder to use effectively -- but include tools appropriate for many situations. Keychain-style tools often include screwdriver tips, a small blade, LED light, and a whistle or compass. These tools are geared toward wilderness enthusiasts as a lightweight safety device.

Pocket-knife multifunction tools were first pioneered by the Wenger S.A. and Victorinox A.G. These companies own the trademark "Swiss Army Knife." This popular tool originated in Ibach Schwyz, Switzerland in 1897, and was issued to the Swiss army. Several variations of this type of multifunction tool are produced by Wenger and Victorinox. Other Swiss-like designs are available from several different manufacturers. These implements typically integrate small tools that fold out of a pocket-knife-style body. Some tools incorporated include tweezers, scissors, file, saw, can opener, screwdriver tips and a variety of blades. Pocket-knife multi-tools vary widely in size, and are often small enough to attach to a keychain.
Single-Handle Style

Single-handle-style multifunction tools offer a the second greatest number of options.These tools are often geared for one specific function, with additional options. Typically, single-handle tools include pliers or a specific wrench or screwdriver on the end. Tools that fold out from the handle might include Allen keys or a blade. Some single-handle multi-tools feature interchangeable screwdriver tips of various sizes and shapes, a blade or utility knife or a folding saw.
