How to Use a Reusable Water Bottle

The benefits of using reusable water bottles are numerous. Americans use 28 billion single-use plastic water bottles every year, 80 percent of which end up in landfill sites. What's more, harmful substances found in plastic water bottles have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, obesity and diabetes. To avoid these risks and help environmental efforts, select a stainless steel, reusable water bottle. Proper care is key to safe, healthy use of a reusable bottle.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your bottle thoroughly before its first use. When using the dishwasher, place your bottle on the top shelf, away from the heating element.

    • 2

Wash out your bottle after every use to prevent the buildup of mold or bacteria. Leave to soak in hot, soapy water. Alternatively, soaking in hot water with baking soda or lemon juice also will keep your bottle clean. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water before using.

    • 3

Dry reusable bottles completely after washing to reduce the risk of mold or bacteria forming.

    • 4

Store your reusable bottle in the freezer between uses to prevent bacteria buildup.

    • 5

Fill your bottle full of fresh tap or filtered water. At the end of the day, drain unused water and clean your bottle as outlined in previous steps so it is ready to be used with fresh water the following day.

    • 6

Sterilize your bottle should mold buildup occur. Some areas, particularly under the lid, take longer to dry and can therefore contribute to the growth of mold over time. Sterilize a toothbrush with boiling water, add some baking soda to the bristles and scrub the moldy area thoroughly. Once all mold is removed, wash the bottle again, following steps 1 or 2.
