Put on your skates first in your living room, carpeted or grassy area. Sit on a firm chair and lace up or latch your skates to fit comfortably around your ankles and calves. Your skates will be snug but shouldn't be tight.

    • 2

Plant both feet on the ground and rise to a standing position. Hold on to something waist high if you wish.

    • 3

Balance on both feet with your weight on the balls of your feet. Shift your weight a little forward and back to get used to the way your boots feel.

    • 4

Return to a sitting position keeping your balance forward toward your toes to keep your feet from rolling out from underneath you.

    • 5

Move to a cement surface to practice standing up and staying still. Put on your skates and all your protective gear. Again start out on a firm chair, bench or step. Stand up keeping knees firm and feet at a 90 to 45 degree angle to keep from rolling.
