How to Slalom Stop on Rollerblades

There are several ways to stop on in-line skates depending on your skill level. Beginners should use the brake on the heel of one of the boots. For intermediates, there is the T-stop, where you place your legs in a perpendicular position and drag your back leg to slow down and stop. Advanced skaters, meanwhile, can use the slalom-style stop.

Instructions

  1. Cutting your speed

    • 1

Skate forward and get a feel for leaning side to side. While skating down a hill, weaving back and forth will seem like a natural way to reduce speed if you have skied before. But on a level surface, weaving is a bit more difficult.

    • 2

Position your feet together and stop striding. Bend your knees. Kick your skates sideways, positioning the wheels at about a 45-degree angle. Lean sideways, away from your skates.

    • 3

Stretch your legs out slightly and relax as you feel the slide happening. Tensing up may cause you to stop the slide or lean in another direction. And if you are not relaxed, unanticipated bumps or debris on the road could make you trip and wipe out. Your body, when relaxed, can respond better than when you're nervous about wiping out or falling, according to Skate FAQ.
