How to Do an Ollie on the Ripstik

A Ripstik is a type of caster board similar to a skateboard. It has two foot pads---the nose and the tail---that are connected via a torsion bar. The foot pads each have one wheel underneath them that rotates 360 degrees. The pads can move independently, so the board can be propelled forward without putting your feet on the ground. You can perform a number of tricks with the Ripstik, including the ollie, a classic. The ollie is an essential trick for advancing your Ripstik technique.

Instructions

Place your back foot on the very back of the rear tail pad. The outside of your back foot can be hanging slightly off the back of the board to help with the pop but the majority of your foot needs to be on the board. Place your front foot in the center to the back third of the front tail pad. The instability of the Ripstik requires you to be very centered on the board. Start by practicing ollies without moving but just balancing on the board on smooth concrete. A grassy field is also a great place to practice your very first ollie.

Pop down with your back foot quickly and sharply. The resulting momentum will shoot the front end of the board far higher than the rear but the whole board should come off the ground. Jump up with the board as it ascends, making sure not to interfere with the upward rise of the board. Slide your front foot forward along the board as it reaches its apex. This movement will balance the board out in the air and allow you to reach your maximum air potential.

Balance the board as flat as possible as you begin to come down from the ollie. Bend your knees in a low and centered athletic stance as you prepare for the landing. Center your feet on the board as you did when you prepared to start the ollie and brace for impact. The board should land flat with both wheels touching down at the same time. Maintain your balance in the moments after landing and make sure you have full control of the board before making any turns or trying any new tricks.
