Green Mountain National Forest
-
The Green Mountain National Forest has over 400,000 acres that encompass nearly 2/3 of the length of the state. The forest has an extensive network of recreational trails for winter use. Snowmobile riders, cross-county skiers and snowshoe hikers can access dozens of trails during the winter months. Explore the terrain near the Grout Pond Area and pass through sights like the Somerset Reservoir, frozen ponds and forested lands. Trails can be accessed from Windham County, just 24 minutes from Athens.
West River Trail
-
Tread the snowy paths of the West River Trail that spans from Jamaica State Park to South Londonderry. This rail trail is in Windham County and access is available at Jamaica State Park, about half an hour away from Athens. The trail is groomed and maintained for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Travel along the banks of West River, snow-covered river valleys and the Ball Mountain Dam. Trail signs will guide you to the top of the dam, where you can take in views of river valleys and sloping, mountainous terrain.
Snowmobiling Tours
-
If you are a novice snowmobile rider or unfamiliar with the Athens area, signing up for a guided snowmobiling tour is an ideal option. Snowmobile tour guides, such as High Country Tours in West Dover, offer guided tours in the Green Mountain National Forest. Choose from one-, two- or three-hour guided trips that include an experienced tour guide, snowmobile and helmets. High Country Tours offers special rates for midweek trips, groups, and during the early and late trips of the winter season.
Regulations
-
Vermont state law requires all snowmobile riders to have state registration, vehicle insurance and a Trail Maintenance Assessment or TMA pass from the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers to use the trails statewide. Registered snowmobiles from other states are permitted, however you will still need to purchase a TMA pass by joining a local club. In Athens, local clubs are the Deerfield Valley Stump Jumpers, Guilford Pitstoppers, Wardsboro Pathfinders and Green Mountain Roamers. A five-day TMA pass is an ideal option for visitors.
