1
Purchase a basic "throwing knives" set at a sporting goods store. As a beginner who'll need lots of practice, choose a set of knives that are durable and balanced, and which you feel comfortable with.
-
2
Build a suitable target for practice. A large, broad piece of lumber, or thick plywood (preferably 4/5 sq. ft.), is perfect. Spray, or hand paint, a large, white X or circle on the board, to act as your target. As you perfect your knife throwing with practice, you may paint a bull's-eye or reduce the size of the circle or X on the board.

3
Select a spacious area to practice in. A large outdoor area is safer for practice than a room indoors. Mount the board approximately, 10 to 12-feet away from you, ensuring that the painted target is at eye level.
-
4
Assume a balanced stance. Face the target by assuming a firm posture, as do dart players (right foot forward, if you are right-handed). Hold the knife blade firmly between thumb and forefinger, a little more than an inch from its pointed edge.
-
5
Raise and bend your elbow while drawing your arm back over shoulder. Keep blade and handle parallel to the ground with blade firmly gripped. Keep your stance balanced and steady. Keep your eyes fixed on target before throwing the knife.
-
6
Throw the knife in a fluid, relaxed manner. As a beginner, most of your throws are likely to go awry. Keep practicing until you achieve more accuracy. Reduce the size of the target as your accuracy improves.
