How to Throw a Knife

Knife throwing is an age-old artform and a useful survival skill. With a little practice, technique and a trusty blade, impress your friends at parties or become a master at hunting small game.

  • Knife with dull blade
  • Plywood or styrofoam target

Instructions

      Set up the target at eye level.

      Stand directly in front of the target, 8 to 10 feet away. Stagger your stance with the foot opposite your throwing arm placed slightly forward.

      Hold the knife by the blade end with a relaxed but controlled grip.

      Bend your elbow so that the knife is pulled back even with your ear, and your elbow is aimed at the target.

      Snap your throwing arm forward, following through until your arm is fully extended, and release the knife at the end of your follow through. Refrain from using your wrist.

      Remove the knife from the target. Repeat as necessary.
