WWE Belt History

In pro wrestling, the top wrestlers are awarded with championship belts. Since the WWE has been the top wrestling federation for many years, the WWE title is the most prestigious title in pro wrestling history. Many famous wrestlers have held the WWE title during the past 50 years.

  1. History

    • In 2011, the WWE title will be 50 years old because the first holder of the WWE title was Buddy Rogers in January 1961.

    Title Holders

    • Thirty-nine wrestlers have held the WWE title once, 20 wrestlers have won the title more than once and 13 wrestlers have won the WWE title three times or more.

    Record Holder

    • In February 2009, Triple H won the WWE title for the eighth time to pass the Rock with most WWE title reigns.

    Famous Champions

    • There have been many famous wrestlers that have held the WWE title, including Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, the Iron Sheik, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, the Undertaker, the Rock, Triple H, John Cena and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

    Lineage

    • The WWE title is one of three world championships in the WWE, but it is the only one whose lineage goes back to the WWF. The other two titles are traced to ECW and WCW.

    Television

    • The three world championships in the WWE belong to a different WWE television program.
