How to Increase Fans in School Sports Teams

Many school sports teams suffer from a lack of fans, which can be demoralizing for the team and worrisome if the team relies on income generated by attendance. This is true at both the secondary and post-secondary level. There are a number of different ways that interest in sports teams can be increased and a fan base deepened.

Instructions

    • 1

Promote and sell team merchandise, such as t-shirts and sweaters. Partner up with other campus buildings that are frequented by students buying things, such as the book store, to sell merchandise with team logos on it, serving as advertising for the team.

    • 2

Approach local businesses about sponsoring or donating to a particular game or event. Advertising that food is freely available to fans, or that something will be raffled off at the game is sure to draw crowds.

    • 3

Organize team rallies around a game or event. Tailgate parties before a home game, for example, can help bring people out to the game and foster team spirit.

    • 4

Approach on-campus and off-campus newspapers about writing something about a game or event. A popular on-campus newspaper may be read by thousands, and a positive story could convince many of them that a game is worth attending.

    • 5

Use social media websites and services, such as Facebook or Twitter, to help build a following for the team. Social media platforms can be used to announce games and events, as well as promotions and other incentives to attend. These social media are free to set up and use.
