A Guide for Installing Compound Bow Cables

A compound bow is a type of bow that uses semi-rigid limbs which support pulleys. Cables, otherwise known as strings, are strung between the pulleys. The bow is grasped in the hand of an extended arm while the other hand nocks an arrow and draws the bow string. The cables must be properly cared for to maintain integrity. Care and maintenance includes frequent waxing and protection from the elements. Excessive use, prolonged storage or improper maintenance may cause damage to the cords. Damaged cords must be replaced for safety purposes and proper operation.

      Position the bow press on a flat surface in front of you. The bow press should be positioned horizontally so you have equal access to the right and left edge.

      Turn the bar in the middle of the box press in a counterclockwise motion until the vise is fully opened.

      Slide the bow into the press so the bow rest and hand-grip are centered in the vise. Turn the vise bar in a clockwise motion until the bow is held firmly in position.

      Turn the knobs on the outside of each end of the press in a counterclockwise motion to loosen the slider. Move the slider up so that the limb holder can slide of the top of each pulley. Tighten the slider by turning the knobs in a clockwise motion.

      Tighten the bolt on each limb holder with a wrench until all pieces are firmly in place.

      Connect the right end of the cable placed through the guide of the center vise to the corresponding limb holder bolt. Connect the left end of the cable to the corresponding limb holder bolt. Adjust the length of the chain using the chain lengths until the cable is taut.

      Slide the bowstring wax along the new cable and inspect the cable for any kinks or frayed areas. Rub wax into the string with your fingers.

      Identify the attachment points of the old cable. Attach the new cable to the first attachment point and wrap the string through the pulleys and around the bow mechanisms following the path of the old cable. Attach the end of the new cable to the final attachment point.

      Inspect the old cable and new cable to make sure that the paths and tension are the same. Remove the old string. Inspect the new cable to make sure that the installation path remained the same. Fix any misalignment.

      Disconnect the vise guide wire from the left limb holder bolt. Disconnect the wire from the right limb holder bolt.

      Loosen the bolt on each limb holder with a wrench.

      Turn the knobs on the outside of each end of the press in a clockwise motion to loosen the slider and release the limb holders.

      Turn the vise bar in a counter-clockwise motion until the bow is released. Slide the bow off the press.
