1
Cock the crossbow back and pull on the drawstring. If this is not possible, simply use the crank to put the device in the proper position, as you would right before firing. Put on the device's safety to prevent it from unexpectedly discharging. You may be seriously injured if the safety is not on, especially if you are attempting to change the string during a misfire.
-
2
Place the new cable so it rests along the same length as the damaged string. Place the string through the loops on the bow and make sure it is properly situated through the bow's ends. Check the connections twice to make sure everything is properly secured. If the new cable is not installed correctly, it may undo itself and cause damage to the bow.

3
Pull the cable away from the bow like you are about to fire the bow. Ensure you have a very tight grip on the new string. This is especially important if the bow you are using is high powered and can release a very heavy pressure force. Turn off the safety on the bow, and pull the trigger.
-
4
Allow the bow to properly contract as it would when you release the cable. Let the bow retract, and remove the old string when the bow is fully relaxed. Disconnect the damaged string by taking it from the ends and the loopholes. Dispose of the old string.
