How to Aim a Traditional Bow

Archery, which is the practice of using a bow and arrow for hunting or sport shooting, is popular. From the Olympic Games to hunters in the forest, archers literally can be seen everywhere. Form and accuracy in archery generally requires copious amounts of practice and experience. One of the most important elements of an accurate shot in archery, as with all shooting sports, is the ability to aim properly.

Nock the arrow on the bowstring. This is done by placing the nock, or groove of the arrow, securely onto the center of the bowstring with the opposite end of the arrow resting against the side of the bow handle.

    • 2

Draw the string back using the index, middle and ring finger of your draw hand with the arrow between the index and middle fingers. Archers who are right-handed would use their right hand to draw, and vice versa for left-handed archers. The opposite hand should be securely holding the bow handle, with the arm stretched and parallel to the target.

Aim your shot by looking at the target with both eyes open while looking down the shaft of the arrow. Align the arrow and target within the same line of sight so they appear in the same place. Compensate for wind and gravity, which can cause the arrow to drop and deviate from the target. The ability to do this comes with practice. If you are using a bow with a sight, align the bow sight with the target. This is done by making the sight and target appear in the spot in the same line of sight when looking down range.

Relax the fingers of your draw hand to release the bow string. This will send the arrow down range and toward your target.
