How to Install a Roof Mount Basketball Goal

Installing a roof-mount basketball goal requires a telescopic mounting bracket that can be adjusted for height, pitch and plumb. The specially designed mount is constructed to adjust to the slope of the roof while holding the backboard in a vertical position. When installing a roof-mounted basketball goal (backboard and rim) one of the most critical steps is properly sealing the mounting holes with a weatherproof silicone-based roof cement. If this is not done properly, rain will seep under the mount and into the roof causing water damage.

  • Basketball goal
  • Drill

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a roof studs (truss) with the stud finder. Set the bottom of the bracket in line with the studs and flush with the end of the roof.

    • 2

Mark spots on the roof through the mounting holes in the bracket with the pen. Set the bracket aside.

    • 3

Insert the bit into the drill and drill holes through the roof and into the studs.

    • 4

Apply a liberal amount of roof cement into the holes. Cut one-inch square pieces of fiberglass mesh, cover both sides with cement and lay over the holes. Set the mounting bracket in place and secure with the lag bolts using the socket wrench. Do not over-tighten the lag bolts. Cover the heads and surrounding area with the roof cement.

    • 5

Install the backboard onto the front of the bracket with the mounting bolts, using spacers if needed. Attach the lock washers and nuts and tighten until snug.

    • 6

Adjust the mounting bracket so the backboard is flush with the edge of the roof. Place the level against the front of the backboard and adjust for plumb. Tighten the adjustment bolts and install the rim and net.
