Basketball Grants for Youth

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the United States. As children watch today's superstars run up and down the court, there is no shortage of kids who want to learn how to play the game and compete against their friends. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to come up with the funds and the organization necessary to facilitate youth leagues in certain areas. There are many individuals and groups who recognize this problem and offer grants to help develop new basketball players across the country.

  1. Jalen Rose Foundation

    • Retired NBA star Jalen Rose knows first-hand how hard it can be for a young person trying to get involved with sports. For this reason, Rose started a foundation dedicated to providing opportunities for children in under-served areas. Grants are awarded to nonprofit groups to help facilitate programs that allow children to play basketball while focusing on education and empowerment. Awards are usually given to organizations working in urban areas such as Detroit, Rose's hometown. The foundation also provides scholarships to Detroit area high school seniors.

    Good Sports

    • The nonprofit organization Good Sports strives to increase youth participation in sports in order to keep children fit and involved in recreation throughout their entire lives. Good Sports works to provide needed equipment to youth sports groups to ensure that participants can play basketball and other sports as they were intended. The group offers equipment grants to qualified organizations that can be used to purchase basic equipment, jerseys and shoes for young people in need. Groups must serve children between the ages of 5 and 18 in an impoverished area in the United States.

    Responsible Sports

    • Liberty Mutual has teamed up with several national youth sports groups to form the Responsible Sports foundation, which supports local sports groups including youth basketball leagues. The focus of the group is to create new youth sports programs and to help established ones maintain their work. Available to nonprofit organizations and local youth leagues, Liberty Mutual offers Responsible Sports Community Grants to help provide funds to keep children on the court and off the streets. According to the program's website, it "helps provide precious financial resources -- $2,500 grants -- in recognition of local dedication to responsibility in communities across the country."
