Instructions

    • 1

Take the basketball and dribble directly to the top of the key, the area directly above the free throw line. Decide if you are going to dribble to the right or to the left. It is usually better to dribble with your strong hand.

    • 2

Take your first step quickly and aggressively either to the right or to the left. Your first step will help you get a clear angle and path to the basketball hoop and give you an advantage over the defender.

    • 3

Dribble the basketball with your strong hand low and close to your body. Keep the opposite hand raised at your waist to protect the basketball and shield the defender.

    • 4

Lean your shoulder into the defender to provide additional strength, balance and support as you dribble the basketball to the hoop.

    • 5

Dribble the basketball aggressively and keep your eyes on the hoop. Be aware of how close you are to the basket.

    • 6

Lay the ball up against the backboard for a layup, or dunk the basketball directly through the hoop. Keep your free hand up to shield the defender as you release the basketball.
