How to Put in an In-Ground Basketball Hoop

Basketball is a popular American sport, and a fun summer and fall pastime for the whole family. Many different types of basketball hoops are on the market, but an in-ground hoop is the ultimate--offering a stable, professional and safe construction. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the basketball hoop pole and apply a strip of masking tape 18 inches up from the bottom.

    • 2

Mix the concrete with water as detailed on the concrete mix packaging.

    • 3

Locate the best spot for your basketball hoop and dig a square hole two-feet deep and two-feet wide/long.

    • 4

Pour the mixed concrete into the hole until it is almost completely filled.

    • 5

Insert the basketball pole into the center of the hole, and push down until the 18-inch mark is aligned with the surface of the concrete. Have an assistant hold the pole and use your level to make sure it is correctly aligned.

    • 6

Pour the remaining cement mix into the hollow pole to reinforce it in position. Continue holding the pole in the correct position until the cement hardens adequately to prevent the pole moving. Leave to dry for a minimum of 48 hours.

    • 7

Attach the hoop to the backboard and the net to the hoop as directed in your basketball hoop instruction manual. Use your wrench or socket set to fasten the bolts securely between the hoop rim and backboard.

    • 8

Mount the backboard to the top of the basketball pole as directed in your kit's instruction manual. This will usually require two guide screws to be secured between the backboard and pole. Ensure all fittings are securely fastened.
