Campagnolo Ultra-Torque Installation

A crankset forms the heart of a bicycle's drive train. During pedaling, the crankset causes the chain to rotate, which in turn drives the bicycle's rear wheel. Ultra-Torque is Campagnolo's answer to this device. Both ends of the crankset come together by virtue of an integrated axle, one half of which is attached to each crank arm. The design promises "lightness" and "rigidity." The Ultra-Torque system includes a left and right crank arm, two bearing cups, a retaining spring, a wave washer, and a fixing bolt. Learn to install these pieces properly for safe and effective operation of your Campagnolo Ultra-Torque system.

Instructions

    • 1

Grab both bearing cups. Identify the cup with two small holes in its side. This is the right side cup, corresponding with the drive side of the bicycle.

    • 2

Position yourself in front of the right side of the bicycle's bottom bracket shell -- the hollow shell at the bottom of the bicycle frame.

    • 3

Thread the right side Ultra-Torque bearing cup into the right side of the bottom bracket shell. After the first quarter-turn, begin applying Loctite 222 generously over the bearing cup threads. Cover the threads entirely.

    • 4

Tighten the bearing cup fully by hand. Use a rag to wipe away excess Loctite.

    • 5

Position yourself on the other side of the bicycle in front of the left side of the bottom bracket shell. Begin installing the second Ultra-Torque bearing cup on this side of the bottom bracket. Once again cover the bearing cup threads in Loctite 222 after the first quarter-turn.

    • 6

Tighten the left side bearing cup fully. Wipe away excess Loctite.

    • 7

Sit before the right side bearing cup once again. Grab the retaining spring and position it on the bearing cup so that its two ends are near the two holes in the side of the bearing cup.

    • 8

Grab the right side Campagnolo Utra Torque crank. The right side crank contains the chain wheels as well as one-half of the axle.

    • 9

Install the right crank axle through the center of the right hand bearing cup. Press the crank firmly against the bearing cup.

    • 10

Direct the two ends of the retaining spring into the two holes in the side of the bearing cup. The retaining clip serves to hold the right side crank in place.

    • 11

Sit before the left side bearing cup. Grab the left side crank.

    • 12

Install the left side crank axle through the left side bearing cup, in turn mating the two halves of the axle.

    • 13

Check that the crank arms are aligned correctly. The arms, onto which the pedals will be attached, should be positioned at 180 degrees from one another. If they are not, remove the left side crank and reposition it accordingly.

    • 14

Insert the fixing bolt through the center of the right side crank.

    • 15

Install a 17mm socket onto the tip of your socket wrench. Fit the Campagnolo UT-BB110 tool into the 17mm socket.

    • 16

Reach over to press the left side crank against the side of the bike while using the UT-BB110 tool and socket wrench to tighten the fixing bolt. Holding the left side crank during this process ensures that both ends of the axle mate effectively while the fixing bolt is being tightened.
