How to Put a Bicycle Rack on a Trunk

Trunk-mounted bike racks use nylon webbing straps with hard rubber hooks to attach the rack to the car. The rack arms are made from metal and hard plastic and are available in models that carry up to four different bikes. Each maker uses its own particular straps and rack arms, but they all follow a basic method of attachment. Follow a simple formula to attach the rack to the trunk.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the rack on the ground next to the car trunk. Turn the side knob-dials and pull the rack arms open. Pull the straps out from the rack and remove any knots in the straps.

    • 2

Place the rack onto the trunk of the car so the rubber bumpers on the rack rest firmly against the car's bumper.

    • 3

Pull the two top straps up and place the hard rubber hooks under the trunk lip near the hinges.

    • 4

Pull the bottom two rack straps out and attach the hooks under the bumper. Pull the strap tighteners to snug the rack to the car trunk. Go to the top and pull down on the straps to snug the top of the rack to the trunk.

    • 5

Tighten the dial knobs on the side of the rack to lock it into position.
