1
Position a step ladder firmly under the joist where you would like to attach the bag. Set up your drill and and extension cord -- as cordless drills may not be powerful enough for this job, or it may drain their battery quickly. Put your your safety glasses on and get a marking pen. You can set your tools on the paint tray of your step ladder.

2
Hold a 3/8-inch or larger diameter U-bolt up to the bottom chord of the I-beam with one prong of the U-bolt on either side of the I-beam's center cord. Mark two areas to drill holes. Be very accurate as it will be difficult to widen or move them if they are not positioned correctly. Also, avoid putting a single hook on one side as it will exert torsion on the beam that it was not designed for.

3
Drill a pilot hole in the center of each mark using a 1/8-inch steel-cutting drill bit. Drill straight up, through the bottom chord. Don't go too fast. Let the bit do the cutting work. Use a small amount of cutting oil on the bit if it's getting too hot or binding.
-
4
Drill the final holes 1/2-inch, giving yourself a little extra room. Or drill an intermediate hole first with a 1/4-inch steel-cutting bit. This is advisable if your drill feels underpowered.
-
5
Insert the threaded end of the U-bolts through the holes. Reach up and over the bottom chord and place a washer over each threaded end of the U-bolt, followed by a locking washer for each. Temporarily thread one of the bolts on, just enough to hold the U-bolt in place.
-
6
Squirt a drop or two of thread-locking adhesive inside the threads of the second bolt, thread it onto the U-bolt, then tighten it snugly with a wrench.
-
7
Unthread the first bolt. Place a couple drops of thread-locking adhesive on it and replace it, tightening it down firmly. Hang the heavy bag from the hook.
