Hanging a Heavy Bag in Garage Rafters

Boxing, kickboxing and martial arts forms all require time-intensive practice and rigorous training in order to excel at the sports. Part of several training methods includes equipment such as a heavy bag. Heavy bags, or punching bags, generally weigh more than 75 pounds and need to be hung securely in order to avoid damage or injury. You can hang a heavy bag in your garage rafters so that you can train at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an area in your garage that will give you adequate space to maneuver and strike the bag. An ideal area is directly under a crossbeam between garage rafters, away from walls or other obstructions.

    • 2

Drill pilot holes into the crossbeam to match the holes for your mount. Screw the heavy bag mount into the crossbeam between the garage rafters using a screwdriver or screw gun. As all heavy bags vary between manufacturer, the mounting system will correspondingly vary. This could be a heavy duty eye-bolt or "S" hook, swivel bolt or a bracket mount system with a swivel bolt or "S" hook.

    • 3

Instruct a buddy or two to hold the heavy bag upright while you assume your typical punching stance. The sweet spot of the bag needs to be at eye level. Generally, the sweet spot is marked by a logo or label, typically slightly higher than the center of the bag.

    • 4

Measure the chain to the needed link so you can hang the bag so that the sweet spot remains at eye level. Slip the chain link over the mounting swivel bolt, "S" hook or eye-bolt, whichever is used for your specific heavy bag. Note to secure the chain to the mount according to manufacturer instructions.
