Wrist Wrapping Techniques in Boxing

A lot of preparation goes into the sport of boxing, including the equipment that the boxer uses. Not only do fighters have to wear gloves that fit and a cup and supporter, but boxers must have their wrists wrapped in order to protect their hands, fingers and wrists from injuries.
  1. Adequate tightness

    • The wraps used on wrists have to be tight enough to be secure but not too tight that it cuts off circulation in the hands and fingers. It's actually a fine line because if the wrap is too loose it won't protect the hand from injury. If the wrap doesn't feel right, you need to do it over again.

    Figure 8 configuration

    • The Figure 8 configuration for a boxing wrap is one of the best to use in order to protect the hand, fingers and wrist. Do it by starting the wrap on top of the knuckles, go up and around the wrist and then back around the knuckles. Continue in this manner until the hand is wrapped.

    Added protection for the thumb

    • If the thumb is not wrapped adequately it is in position to get injured on any punch that is not delivered squarely. You must wrap the thumb three times to cushion it and keep it from getting hurt when delivering a blow. Do not go around the thumb more than three times or it will lose its dexterity during the fight.
