Fencing Clubs in Hawaii

Fencing is one of only four sports included in every modern Olympic games since 1896. It has a reputation as a gentleman's sport---a martial art for the elite. In the United States, fencers participate in national and international competitions, preparing for future Olympic games. Hawaii, has a few notable fencing clubs that offer instruction in the saber, foil and epée, for students interested in learning a new sport---or perhaps preparing to fence for Olympic gold.
  1. Hawaii Fencer's Club

    • The Hawaii Fencer's Club, located on the Pacific Buddhist Academy's campus in Honolulu, is the oldest competitive fencing club in Hawaii. Led by instructor Tony Nishimura, as of 2010, classes are held Tuesday through Friday for beginners to advanced students. Private lessons are available in the evenings after group classes. Open fencing is available for club members Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. As of 2010, membership dues are $240 per year for students enrolled in private or group classes and $600 per year for open fencing. Class fees are $40 per class, for four classes per month.

    Salle Honolulu Fencing Club

    • The Salle Honolulu Fencing Club is located in Honolulu, about two miles from the shore between Mamala and Maunalua Bays. Instructors Colin Chock and Nestor Rosario teach the foil, saber and epée to both children and adults, as of 2010. Chock and Rosario have United States Fencing Coaches Association certification. Equipment is provided for the first month of classes, but students are encouraged to purchase their own equipment. Membership inquiries should be sent to instructor Chock.

    Oahu Fencing Center

    • Oahu Fencing Center offers use of their equipment during classes free of charge.

      The Oahu Fencing Center opened in 2004, in the Palama Settlement, Honolulu. It's a non-profit organization dedicated to fencing instruction and promotion. The center has classes for beginners on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. and for intermediate and advanced students on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. As of 2010, former Olympic armorer Michael Aiau gives instruction in foil, saber and epée. Quarterly membership fees are $175 with open fencing floor fees for $15 per night. Two free trial classes are offered to new students. Students without fencing gear may borrow some for no charge.
