How to Become a Star Receiver

Becoming a star receiver requires motivation and practice. Receivers are fast and capable of memorizing specific routes that are coordinated and called by the coaches and quarterback. The receiver is an important part of the football team and the player is responsible for many of the big plays. Game changing plays are exciting and successful receivers gain attention from fans as they make visually enticing plays in the open field. Becoming a star receiver is a desirable position that is not easily accomplished.

      Participate in a strength and conditioning program at least five days each week. Practice speed drills and develop explosive energy by practicing Olympic lifts and plyometric movements. Olympic lifts are explosive actions with an artificial weight. Plyometric movements only use body weight but require explosive movements in the form of jumps. Both exercises develop fast twitch muscle fibers and increase strength and speed. The strength and stamina are necessary to play a full game and the speed is crucial for success as a receiver.

      Study the playbook to memorize the routes, calls and audible signals. You must know the routes in order to receive a pass. Practice the footwork for each route on your own and with the quarterback at practice.

      Develop eye hand coordination and catching skills by receiving practice passes from the quarterback. Catch the ball at different angles using your hands and not your body. Catch the ball in front of your body, to the side of your body and over your shoulder.

      Learn how to shed the corner-back on initial contact by using misdirection or a swim move. Push the corner-back with one arm while swimming the other arm over the side of the player. This allows you to move past the corner-back and run your route without interference.

      Be competitive in practice and competition. Numerous players desire the receiver position and working harder and outperforming the other players increases your chances of starting and making an impression during the game.
