How to Replace a Broken Ice Hockey Stick During a Game

In ice hockey, one of the player's most important pieces of equipment is their stick. If a hockey stick breaks during a game it must be replaced. The only player allowed to play with a broken stick is the goal tender. Replacing a broken stick during the action of the game is vital to the game's outcome.

      Get the attention of the coach. Skate toward the bench. If a stick breaks during a game the stick must be discarded immediately and a new stick must be used.

      Grab a replacement stick from the coach if there is one in the bench area. Remember to take the broken stick to the bench with you.

      Call for a substitute if there are no sticks available in the bench area. If there are no replacement sticks in the bench area, another player must enter the game in your place until a replacement stick is found.

      Find a replacement stick before returning to the ice. Wait for the coach to call the substitute back before you return to the ice. Remember that your skates must not touch the ice before the other player's skates leave the ice.
