Ideal Weather Conditions for Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is an American-born sport conceptualized in 1968 by Joel Silver, a Lafayette College graduate who aimed to create the ultimate game experience. Ultimate Frisbee combines the traditional game of disc toss with the tackling techniques of football and the goalie position in soccer. The game is played outdoors and is most successful in wide open settings with mild weather conditions.
  1. Wind

    • To achieve an effective Ultimate Frisbee toss, the wind speed can't be too high. Ultimate Frisbee is most often played on beaches or in wide open parks where there are few trees or disruptive structures. High winds can get under the Frisbee and change its direction, making it difficult for team members to pass and shoot. A mild wind which provides a subtle lift to the Frisbee is ideal.

    Clarity

    • A bright and sunny beach setting provides required visibility for Ultimate Frisbee players, helping them locate the Frisbee as it glides through the air. In a park setting, the ideal conditions are sun and a cloudless sky. Morning games in heavy fog pose an issue for players' visibility. Players choosing to compete in poor weather conditions risk being hit with the Frisbee and injuring themselves or other players.

    Temperature

    • The uniform for college Ultimate Frisbee players and competitors in the Ultimate Players Association consists of a T shirt and shorts. The ideal temperature for an Ultimate Frisbee game is between 70 and 80 degrees. At these temperatures, players remain comfortable. During beach tournaments, game temperatures can reach the 90s and sometimes the low 100s. In these conditions, players should keep hydrated, as Ultimate Frisbee rules limit the amount of substitutions teams can make in a game.

    Warnings

    • While Ultimate Frisbee can be played in heavy rain and snow, if a storm arrives in the middle of a game, the teams must decide whether to continue the game. Teams that play through precipitation risk player injuries and damage to the playing field. If visible lightning strikes in close proximity to the area where the game is being played, the teams should terminate the game immediately.
