How to Break in Numbers on a Jersey

Certain sports jerseys, like the ones worn by football or hockey players, have large numbers that are sewn onto the front and back. These numbers can be stiff at first. It's uncomfortable to wear a jersey that doesn't lay flat across your body due to the numbers. Whether you are a spectator who purchased a fan jersey, or you play on a team, you can break the jerseys in so they are less uncomfortable to wear.

Wash your jersey according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pay close attention to the water temperature, such as cold or warm, that the maker recommends. Use color safe detergent and a liquid fabric softener. Adjust the amount of each item, based on the size of your overall load. Repeat this step several times. The numbers will soften slightly each time you wash the jersey.

Dry the jersey with a fabric softener sheet after each wash. Again, check the washing instructions to determine how the jersey should be dried. Most likely, they will instruct you to dry on delicate to medium heat to avoid shrinkage of the jersey. The fabric softener heat, as well as the heat from the dryer, will soften the numbers.

Wear the jersey as often as possible. Your natural movement will cause the jersey numbers to soften over time. Additionally, wear the jersey while you practice your sport. The heightened activity, as well as the jersey numbers absorbing your sweat, will start to break down the stiff fibers.
