Directions for a Protective Cup

Protective cups are designed to protect the male genital area during sporting events or other instances when injury could occur. While different sports require different kinds of protective cups, all have the same protective mechanism: they are designed to distribute force to the pelvic bone rather than to the genitals, while absorbing impact. A properly worn protective cup will help ensure better protection and injury prevention.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim the hair, if necessary, around your pubic area using a pair of hair-trimming scissors. Longer pubic hair may become snagged in the edges of a protective cup upon impact.

    • 2

Remove all underwear. Less fabric between your body and the cup makes the protection more effective, suggests Jockwoof's Guide to Protective Cups.

    • 3

Put on the jock strap the way that you would a pair of briefs, simply by stepping into them and drawing them up your body. You may use either a regular jockstrap for or one with a pocket. The regular jockstrap tends to hold the cup more firmly to the body, while a pocketed jockstrap tends to come with the protective cup.

    • 4

Push the protective cup into the jockstrap, moving it back and forth until the genitals are completely covered. If necessary, lift your genitals into the cup before pushing the cup against your body. The less space between the cup and your body, the more protection it offers. Protective cups are shaped like V's, and the narrower end should be pointing down your body.

    • 5

Put on the rest of your clothing the way you would normally.
