1
Practice using your stick until you are comfortable with it. Identify each position of your hands that produces the best results for the different tasks you complete.
-
2
Determine the most common tasks you complete on the field, and the most common way you will be holding the stick. For example, an attack player may elect to tape high on the stick at his one-handed cradle point and low on the stick for shooting. A face-off specialist would be better served by taping where his hands are for face-offs and passing, as the specialist often looks to pass the ball shortly after securing it on a draw.
-
3
Using the marker, mark the points on the stick where your hands are positioned when completing the tasks you wish to tape for.
-
4
Wrap the shaft of the stick with tape at the points you marked. For one-handed grips, use three wraps of tape -- near the top and bottom of the hand -- and a third, centered wrap. For two-handed grips, use two pieces of tape for each hand placement, so the two wraps for each hand are centered on each hand when gripped, with approximately 1 to 2 inches between the wraps.
-
5
Hold onto the taped sections of the stick when using it on the field. With the tape wraps in position as guidelines, it will be easier to find your most comfortable grip in the high-speed pressure of a game.
