How to Concentrate Before a Game

An inability to focus on your goals can lead to your defeat in a competition. While it may seem natural to fool around and talk big about victory before a game, it's important to focus seriously on your goal. Celebrating and horseplay can wait until after you taste victory. The pregame jitters can leave you feeling loopy and distracted, but you need to display discipline.

Instructions

    • 1

Relocate to a quiet place where you can sit alone with your thoughts. Your teammates can create a loud distraction that will sap your focus. Tell people where to find you if they need you, but otherwise request solitude.

    • 2

Talk to yourself about how you see the game ending. Setting goals verbally can help you focus on them and achieve them. Tell yourself you can accomplish your goals to psyche yourself up.

    • 3

Stand and do some light exercise to get your body in prime condition for the game. Focus on muscles that grow the most tired during your performance. Once you feel loose and relaxed, go back to relaxing in a quiet location.

    • 4

Picture the game in your mind and the actions you want to take to gain victory. If your mind wanders, go back to picturing the game.

    • 5

Spend some time with your teammates once you feel prepared for the oncoming competition. Discuss tactics to win the game and ensure everyone knows the role they play.
